Mid year book freak out tag! (2020)

My blog post with my mid year book freak out tag (2020), in the post I talk about The Bear and the nightingale by Katherine Arden, the Betrothed by Kiera Cass and many more books!

Hi lovely reader! In today’s blog post I will be doing the mid year book freak out tag. I always love seeing this tag around on the bookternet so I decided to make a blog post with my responses this year!

Question 1: best book you’ve read so far in 2020?

Question one and I’m already cheating lol, I just find it hard to pick a favourite since I read a wide variety of genres. So my two favourites of the year are The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden, which is a YA fantasy book, and A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder by Holly Jackson, which is a YA murder mystery.

Question 2: best sequel you’ve read so far in 2020?

This one is without a doubt Thunderhead by Neal Schusterman for me! I bingeread the entire Arc of a Scythe series in April of this year and fell completely in love with it. And Thunderhead is my favourite book out of the trilogy. I also made a blog post with a series review for this book, you can find that one here.

Question 3: new release you haven’t read yet, but want to?

There are multiple 2020 releases I haven’t read yet, but really want to get to soon. Just to name three I’m picking Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender, You Should See Me in a Crown by Leah Johnson and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins.

Question 4: most anticipated release for the second half of the year?

I actually made an entire blog post about my most anticipated releases for the second half of 2020, so in case you want to check that one out, you can read it here. However, if I have to pick just one book it’ll have to be The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab. I’ll definitely be pre-ordering this book, I’m just waiting on whether or not there will be a signed edition pre-order through Waterstones, if not I’ll be pre-ordering it through my local bookstore.

Question 5: biggest disappointement?

Once again, I can say without a doubt that my biggest disappointement is The Betrothed by Kiera Cass. I loved the Selection series when I read that in like 2015, so I was completely ready for another royalty book by the same author but this was just a big nope from me. I have a Dutch review for this book up on my blog, in case you’re interested, you can find it here. And you can use the translation function in case you don’t understand Dutch.

Question 6: biggest surprise?

Miracle Creek by Angie Kim. That is an adult court room thriller, which is a subgenre I don’t really read, so I was so surprised when I ended up loving this book. Well, as much as you can love a thriller that involves children dying. I just thought this book was so well done and the diversity in this book is also great!

Question 7: favourite new author?

I think I’ll have to go with Holly Jackson, she wrote A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, which was her debut book. And then she also wrote Good Girl, Bad Blood, which is the sequel to AGGGTM, I haven’t finished that one yet, but I have started it and I’m loving it just as much as the first book!

Question 8: newest fictional crush?

I never really have fiction crushes, so no one.

Question 9: newest favourite character?

I’m going with Vasya from The Bear and the Nightingale because she is so independent and she is constantly described as ‘ugly’ so it’s nice to have a character that isn’t supposed to be expectionally beautiful.

Question 10: book that made you cry?

Well, I’m a massive cry baby, so I cry quite easily, but I think I cried the most whilst reading How To Make Friends With The Dark by Kathleen Glasgow. It’s a book about a girl losing her mother and ending up in foster care, so do I really need to say more?

Question 11: book that made you happy?

I Left The House Today! by Cassandra Calin. This is a graphic novel, and I don’t really read graphic novels, but I saw this one on Netgalley and I thought it looked hilarious so I just read it and it didn’t disappoint! It made me laugh out loud a lot!

Question 12: most beautiful book you’ve bought or received so far this year?

This was a hard one to pick but I’m going with Warriors, Witches Women by Kate Hodges, because there are illustrations throughout the entire book and I’m obsessed with all of those illustrations!

Question 13: what book do you need to read by the end of the year?

I’ve been reading the A Song of Ice and Fire series (aka Game of Thrones) for over 3 years now, so I really need/want to finish it this year. I have three books left (two if you have other editions than I have), so I need to get those books done!

This was so much fun to do! I hope you also enjoyed my responses! Don’t forget to tell me what you’re favourite book of 2020 is so far?
